Oncode Institute at a glance
As a Dutch research institute founded in 2018, Oncode Institute brings together top scientists and partner institutes to accelerate the translation of groundbreaking cancer research into clinical applications for patients. Oncode Institute aims to better understand the mechanisms behind cancer, turn scientific knowledge into innovative methods for diagnosing and treating cancer, and make innovations available to patients faster. In this way, cancer patients can be better served.
Our approach
Oncode Institute is based on three pillars: excellent science, collaboration, and valorisation. We offer a unique ecosystem where science and valorisation unite, shortening the path from laboratory to patient. We invest in a carefully selected group of outstanding researchers – our Oncode Investigators – and give them the funding and freedom to think outside the box.
What is valorisation?
By valorisation, we mean translating research results into concrete social and economic value for society. This way, we ensure that innovative cancer treatments do not remain on paper but become accessible to patients and society.
Only by joining forces can we outsmart cancer. That is why we encourage cooperation across borders between institutes and between disciplines. Through proactive valorisation, we translate research results into concrete social and economic value for society. We act as a connector, facilitator, and booster. In doing so, we strengthen cancer research, the Dutch economy, and patient care. Oncode Institute catalyses scientific breakthroughs and new therapies, contributing to the future of cancer research and better treatment options for patients worldwide.
Who we work with
Oncode Institute unites researchers from 13 different partner institutes in a common mission: to accelerate breakthrough discoveries and drive their translation into new diagnostics and treatments for cancer patients. To increase the impact of our research, we also collaborate with doctors, companies, and patients.
Oncode Investigators and researchers
Oncode Institute’s research team is a select group of 62 Oncode Investigators and their teams. They form a research community of more than 750 scientists. The community conducts basic and applied research to achieve breakthroughs in cancer diagnostics and treatment. Oncode Institute creates optimal conditions in which top researchers have the space to pioneer and conduct in-depth research into how cancer works.
Partners
Oncode Institute collaborates with a wide range of partners. Research organisations and teaching hospitals provide expertise and facilities for research, and patient organisations contribute to understanding patients’ medical needs. The biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries play a critical role in developing and implementing new diagnostics and therapies. These collaborations allow us to combine knowledge, resources, and technologies. Together, we promote the translation of basic research into tangible clinical applications and accelerate progress in the treatment of cancer patients.
Funders
Oncode Institute is only able to realise its mission thanks to the support of its funders – KWF Kankerbestrijding, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (through ZonMw), and the top sector Life Sciences & Health (Health~Holland). All these organizations support Oncode Institute with funding and policy-making. Their contributions enable us to invest in pioneering research, cutting-edge technologies, and valorisation programmes that bring scientific discoveries to practice and patients faster.
Organisation
In addition to the research groups, Oncode Institute has its own staff members, who together with the management team ensure the smooth running of the institute. It includes staff for general management, programme and valorisation management, and research group support. Oncode Institute does not own research facilities. Oncode Investigators conduct their research within Oncode’s partner institutions.
Collaboration leads to better results. It is why Oncode Institute constantly listens to all its stakeholders, from researchers to patients. Various advisory committees and patient representatives are structurally involved in decision-making, contributing to overall transparency and a stronger connection to clinical practice. A supervisory board oversees the Oncode Institute’s management.
